Feeling sorry for Stephenie Meyer

I have never been a fan of the Twilight series. I read the first book, and thought it was okay, but couldn’t stand the rest. In fact this was one of the series that solidified my dislike of a number of tropes, including ‘Will they or won’t they?’. I’m also a critic of the idea that good vampires should be a thing.

Despite that, I think she’s a pretty amazing writer, because she took something intensely boring (teen romance when you’re not a teen is very, VERY boring) and managed to make it interesting for an entire book. That takes talent, as far as I’m concerned. And The Host? Awesome book, will probably re-read it for the rest of my life.

Anyway, I was reading this article, and I got pissed me off on Meyer’s behalf. I can just imagine how awful it is, you write something, and people love it. And some weird ass pornolady comes along and writes an incredibly fucked up, poorly written version of it, and that also becomes famous. Fine, what ever, you think. But after a few more times, it becomes clear. Anything you write in that universe, pornolady is also going to steal, but not so closely that she can be sued. And that is such an incredible piss off!

Authors spend a lot of time on world-building and character development. We fall in love with our creations. To know that not only is there a shitty version out there, but that every single time you now try to write about them, that shit head is going to trash it all and ruin it? Major rage and a fair bit of despair. Because someone has stolen your babies and trashed them.

Nobody deserves that, not even the creator of sparkly vampires.
