Nano confession #5

Sometimes when I’m writing, I’ll forget the name of one of the characters. If I don’t have it handy, I’ll create a filler name and keep on going. Later, often much later, I’ll go back to add a scene, and wonder who original-name guy is!

  1. I do this when in the middle of a story, I decide to change a character’s name. The original name doesn’t fit. As the story progresses, it becomes obvious that the name doesn’t work. I give the character another name, then I have on occasion–forget the new name and start using the old name. It’s very frustrating. I managed to partially solve the problem by printing out early versions of the story. If I don’t lose it then I have the original–or not.
